CLEVELAND, Ohio – Green Day’s “American Idiot,” the musical, has been called a rock opera for millennials who are still trying to find their place in the post 9/11 social and political landscapes.
With such lofty ambitions, “American Idiot” has drawn comparisons to another groundbreaking rock opera from the 1990s – “Rent.” And if there’s one person who can speak on the similarities between the two, it’s Casey O’Farrell.
The Los Angeles based actor and singer stars in “American Idiot” as Will, a young man struggling with depression and addiction as his girlfriend tells him she is pregnant. Prior to taking on the role of Will, O’Farrell starred in “Rent” as Roger, a struggling musician and ex drug addict stricken with HIV.
"I think the two musicals are similar emotionally," says O’Farrell. "The biggest difference is the generational gap. But I think "American Idiot" is that same emotional piece for this generation where Rent was that for a generation in the 1990s."
